The PSE research programme investigates whether the principle of Systematic Exclusion can provide a domain-independent conceptual framework for understanding organization across physical, biological, cognitive, and social systems. <\/span>It is developed as a proposed domain-independent organizational principle<\/strong>. Its scientific value depends on whether it can generate a coherent and empirically fertile research programme, connect findings across established disciplines, and produce claims that can be critically examined.<\/span><\/p>\n

The programme therefore distinguishes carefully between established scientific knowledge, interpretations derived from existing research, and propositions specific to PSE.<\/span><\/p>\n

At first sight, few biological questions seem easier than asking what counts as an individual. We <\/span>recognize an animal, a plant, or a human being almost without thinking. A body appears to <\/span>provide its own answer: here the organism begins; there the surrounding world starts. <\/span>Modern biology has made that apparently simple distinction increasingly di\ufb03cult to maintain.<\/span>
\nThe physical boundary of an organism does not necessarily coincide with its physiological, <\/span>ecological, developmental, immunological, or evolutionary boundary. Microbial communities can <\/span>display striking forms of collective organization. Hosts live in intimate and sometimes <\/span>indispensable association with microbial partners. Eusocial insect colonies can coordinate their <\/span>activities so extensively that the colony itself begins to resemble an organism, while the insects <\/span>composing it remain organisms in their own right. <\/span>This shifts the question. Where an organism ends is only part of the problem.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

This problem begins with a deceptively simple question: Where does the biological individual actually end?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Natural selection is often described as a process of optimization. Strictly speaking, however, this <\/span>is misleading. Evolution does not produce perfect organisms, nor does it strive toward any <\/span>predetermined ideal. It simply preserves those organizational structures that remain sufficiently <\/span>successful under the conditions in which they exist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the most important discoveries in twentieth-century science suggest that the limits of knowledge may not simply reflect the current state of research; they may arise from the very structure of the systems through which knowledge becomes possible. This essay explores that possibility through what is called the Principle of Systematic Exclusion (PSE). The principle states that any coherent system\u2014whether physical, biological, cognitive, or symbolic\u2014can exist or generate knowledge only by systematically excluding a vast range of alternative possibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n
